Boosting Knowledge Management with Knowledge Mapping: An Analysis of Benefits and Challenges

Keywords: knowledge management, knowledge mapping, public sector, case study

Abstract

Objective: to identify the benefits and challenges encountered in implementing knowledge mapping at a public organization in Colombia.

Design/methodology: The study employed a qualitative methodology with a descriptive approach. This single case study also used semi-structured interviews.

Findings: The results demonstrated that knowledge mapping has been instrumental in standardizing processes, ensuring continuity in their development, identifying critical knowledge areas, accelerating learning curves, and facilitating knowledge transfer. However, its implementation has faced numerous challenges, including high staff turnover, lack of employee empowerment, frequent changes in management, and the absence of a robust technical team to support its deployment.

Conclusions: Knowledge mapping is a valuable tool in knowledge management processes, particularly in identifying critical operational knowledge. However, the inherent characteristics of public organizations—such as their approach to human talent management and high administrative rigidity—may pose significant obstacles to an effective and timely implementation of knowledge management strategies.

Originality: This study explores the implementation of knowledge mapping by a public organization, a topic that has received little attention in this sector. In Colombia, the regulations in this area are relatively recent. Consequently, these findings offer decision-makers a better understanding of key aspects to consider when these strategies are implemented.
