Transformational Leadership and Leadership Legitimacy: A Case Study in the Business Administration Program at an Ecuadorian University
Abstract
Objective: To identify the constructs that have the greatest incidence in the perception of Transformational Leadership (TL) and Leadership Legitimacy (LL) among business administration students at an Ecuadorian university.
Design/methodology: The study employed a quantitative, descriptive, non-experimental design with a correlational scope. To assess the constructs under study, a standardized questionnaire was administered to a sample of 368 undergraduate students.
Findings: The results demonstrated a strong correlation between the TL and LL constructs. With regard to TL, the highest rated constructs were individual consideration and laissez faire. In the case of LL, students highly rated all constructs, namely willingness to accept authority, obligation to obey authorities, favorability of evaluations, and attributes of authorities (competencies and integrity), as they play a pivotal role in the legitimate recognition of authority.
Conclusions: Business administration students emphasize individual consideration as crucial for cultivating TL. In addition, LL emerges as a fundamental factor for achieving a leadership style that is perceived as fair and deserving of recognition by collaborators. The positive and moderate relationship identified between TL and LL suggests a meaningful connection that can be effectively applied in various business settings. Integrating strategies and practices that foster TL and LL can optimize effectiveness and performance in both educational and business contexts.
Originality: This study provides empirical evidence regarding LL and the consideration of TL in an academic context.
