Influence of the Internet on Media Consumption Patterns: An Analysis Based on the Local Infrastructure in Colombia
Abstract
This study characterized the influence of the arrival of the Internet on media consumption patterns in thirteen municipalities in Colombia. The case study approach was adopted, based on the analysis of the installed local infrastructure. Data were collected from interviews with 586 households, Internet service providers, and municipal officials. Categories such as content types, frequency, devices used, and effects on communities were evaluated. Content analysis was applied to obtain categories, and exploratory factor analysis was used to identify correlations, thus achieving methodological triangulation. The results indicate an increase in demand for streaming services and a decrease in linear TV consumption, reflecting a diversification of consumption options rather than a total substitution. In addition, on-demand content and watching on mobile devices have become more popular, which has facilitated the exchange of information and opinions on social networks. Autonomy in content selection, especially on platforms like WhatsApp, is noticeable, as well as a positive rating of the Internet service due to the quality of the infrastructure. For some users, the service has become indispensable in their daily lives, evidencing a change in the technological utilization of the installed infrastructure, which allows them to use the media environment to socialize, create support networks, share news, and, finally, as the most interactive means of communication.
